#044 RAF SE 5a Viper 1917

The Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5a Scout with the 200 HP Viper engine first saw service in June of 1917. It quickly became one of the best Allied fighter aircraft of the Great War matching the German Jastas head to head. Distributed to many squadrons of the Royal Flying Corps it was still in action at the Armistice. This shirt features C6490 flown by Billy Bishop as Commander of the 85th Squadron RFC. This was the aircraft he used while flying with the squadron. Bishop had 12 victories in it from May 27 to June 4, 1918. An interesting addition is the Squadron Leader's pennant attached to the rudder. Wingspan 26 ft 7 in (8.11 m)
